A Pretty Good Friday

Before the winter weather moved in and closed school early, we got to attend an award ceremony this morning. The school (grades 1-4) participates in the national Zaner-Bloser handwriting competition. The kids are given something to write and then their handwriting is judged on several factors, including size, shape, spacing, and slant. Tyler won 2nd place out of the 2nd grade boys! We found out that he was a finalist a couple weeks ago. His teacher told us so we could plan to be at the assembly. We were not allowed to tell him, though. When he came into the gym for the assembly, he saw us sitting in the parent section and figured out that he had won. He was still surprised when they called his name, because he thought for sure he would have been in 3rd place. He was very pleased with himself. We are very proud of him!

The first picture is when he first saw us and figured out he had probably won. The third picture is all the 2nd grade winners. (Sorry my pics aren't very good.)

It started to snow as we left the handwriting assembly this morning, and it hasn't stopped. Normally we would be thrilled for a lot of snow, but the kids had plans to see a show and spend the night with Mamaw and their cousins. They weren't able to go because the roads were so bad. They were very disappointed, but we made the best of it by playing together in the snow, baking a belated birthday cake for Dad, and making homemade pizzas for dinner.

And here are a couple more bird pictures. They are not the greatest, but I thought the amount of cardinals was neat. There are 13 cardinals (and some sparrows) in the last picture.

Congrats to Tyler! I remember when I taught first grade, some of the boys had the prettiest handwriting. Nice snowman too!
