Chrysalis Time

All 4 of our caterpillars are now in the chrysalis stage. We got to watch one of them make its chrysalis. We've seen it before, but it's still amazing to watch the transformation. Hopefully we'll get to witness one of them eclose again, too.

This was the last one to change. It made its chrysalis yesterday. Although it looks like you can see a wing, that's just the pattern in the chrysalis itself. Most of the chrysalis is empty at this stage. I'll post another picture when it's a little further along. I'm posting this pic full size. If you click on it, you can see all the detail, especially around the silk button.

Although this picture isn't as crisp, if you click on it, you can see enough details to determine if this butterfly will be a male or female. (If there is a vertical line in the segment directly under the bottom set of black dots at the top of the chrysalis, it will be a female. No line = male.) Can you tell?
