This started as a way to document the amusing antics of our 2 & 4 year old children several years ago. It has evolved into a great forum for keeping grandparents, friends, and other relatives involved in our daily lives. It is also a good place for me to share what is important in our lives, and to document those things I want to be sure I don't forget.

Are you using a laundry hamper or a special cage? Our butterfly cage wore out and I was wondering it a hamper would suffice.
I loaned my butterfly cage to a friend. Shortly after I loaned it to her, we found several more caterpillars that we wanted to bring inside. So, I went to the dollar store in our town in search of a laundry hamper. They didn't have one and I didn't want to drive into town, so I settled for a laundry sorter. It is basically a mesh basket that is open on the top. I set it on it's side and used yarn to stitch the mesh divider it came with to the bottom part of the opened side. I had a mesh laundry bag to wash delicates in that I cut up and used for the top. I stitched it to one side and then used bent paper clips to secure it to the opposite side. The paper clips allow me to open and shut the flap so we can better see the caterpillars/chrysalises, water the milkweed, or let the butterflies go. The only problem I can see with it is if the caterpillars are still really little when you bring them in, they would be able to crawl through the holes. I was worried the holes might be too big for the caterpillars to make their silk button and attach, but they didn't have any problems with that at all. I had the cage sitting on the floor in the sun once, and Clara hit it with her tail and knocked 2 of the chrysalises off. I was able to safety pin them back to the sides and they eclosed just fine, though. So, I guess that was a long way to say that yes, I think a hamper would probably suffice. :)
