The End of Basketball Season
This past weekend Danielle's basketball team travelled to an out of state tournament so the girls could enjoy hanging out together and swimming, in addition to playing basketball, of course. I stayed home with Tyler since he doesn't enjoy spending his weekend watching basketball or swimming with 6th grade girls (although some day he might enjoy that part!). Ron took Danielle, and they had a really nice time.
Danielle's team swept the tournament and came in first place. Danielle had an exceptional weekend and scored multiple times, including a shot that was just inside the 3 point line. So close! This was the last time these girls will play travel ball together. After this, they can play school ball, but it will be different. Any travel teams after this age group only take 2 or 3 players from the same school. The girls played hard and then spent the rest of the evening swimming and celebrating. It sounds like it was a great weekend for making memories. The new medal on her wall is a nice souvenir, too.
Danielle plays a lot of different sports, and her role in each is different. She is not a starter in basketball and has had to learn the importance of being a supporting player. Sometimes that was easier to take than others, but it was a good lesson to learn. There are so many life lessons someone with a good attitude can take away from sports. Thankfully Danielle is that kind of athlete. Our coach is a really great guy who was very patient with Danielle, especially when her other sports got in the way. I hear horror stories about other coaches and other parents of teammates, and I know we are very fortunate to be surrounded be good people and good coaches who genuinely want the best for our daughter.

Valentine's Day

We were wandering the aisles at Walgreens several weeks ago when Danielle fell in love with this giant pink unicorn. Tyler thought the giant candy heart was pretty awesome. So, I went back later and bought both for Valentine's day. There's no way Tyler will ever eat all the candy, but the gifts were a hit.
Each day of February leading up to Valentine's day I wrote down on paper hearts something positive about each kid and taped them to their bedroom doors while they were sleeping. Neither of them said much about it, but I know they read them and might have even looked forward to the next one appearing. Neither kid has taken them down yet, either. Being a teen/tween is hard. I hope they grasp how amazing they really are, despite what the rest of the world tells them.

Our Day Off
This week Saturday and Sunday are sandwiched between a teacher in-service day and President's Day, so we are enjoying a long weekend. On our day off yesterday, the kids and I went tubing. We used to do "things" on any days we had off school, but as the kids have gotten older, it's gotten more complicated. They want to sleep in or just hang out or, well, just be teenagers. Yesterday we made the most of our day off, and we had a really good time together. (Danielle's friend went with us, too, but she's practically family.)
At the top of the hill they tied our tubes together so we could all go down together. I think that made it a lot more fun. I think my screams all the way down the hill made it a lot more entertaining for the kids, too. :)

In the Blink of an Eye
Danielle had dress up day at school today. She used a couple Christmas gift cards and got a pretty new outfit. (Ignore the socks, she hadn't put her boots on yet.) She looks more like a teenager every day.
As you can see from the picture, her right hand is taped up. She sprained her pinky finger at basketball practice the other night. It's sore and swollen still, but it's not broken. Much to her relief, she discovered she can still swing the bat and pass the volleyball. The basketball tournament this weekend may be a little more difficult, though.
I spent part of my evening sitting in an informational meeting for parent's of 8th graders. I'd like to know how we jumped from this
to this
and this
in the blink of an eye. Seriously. When the kids were little, it seemed like we had forever with them. And now here we are, mapping out his last four years of school. The time just keeps slipping away. It makes me sad to think about him growing up and leaving, but every day he does something that makes me proud of the young man he has become. It's bittersweet.

Happy Birthday to Clara! Happy 1/2 Birthday to D!
Today is Clara's 7th birthday. She is a pretty special dog, and it's hard to imagine our lives without her. She enjoyed a couple new toys, some dog treats, and lots of extra belly rubs today.
It's also Danielle's 1/2 birthday. She is 6 months shy of officially being a teenager. She loves all things pig, so I bought a pig cake pan to make her cake. I think the pan itself was cuter than the finished product, but that's probably because I was in a hurry. The first cake I made fell apart because I rushed it. I quickly made another after I got off work and she got home from school. It didn't fall apart, but I did a terrible job icing it. Oh well. 1/2 birthdays don't really count anyway. They're really just an excuse to light candles and eat cake. :)

More of the Same
It's just been more of the same around here this week, with a similar forecast for the coming week. School, work, homework, various sports practices. I wouldn't mind a random snow day, but otherwise, routine is probably pretty good.
Danielle had a really good game in her Friday night hitting/pitching league. It still takes me a second to get used to her standing on the other side of the plate.
She had two basketball games this weekend. Today was our last home game of the season. Next week we have a tournament for the weekly league we've been playing in. In a couple weeks the girls are going to finish up with a final tournament out of state. This will be the last time the girls all play together. After this they will play school ball. Some of them might not play, some might not make the team, the coach will be different. The tournament will be a nice way to end a fun few years of basketball.
